Currently the National Archives of Australia Photo Search is fairly basic. It returns photos with titles containing exact matches of the query terms, ordered by date, title or ID number. We would like to improve this to rank the photos and return more relevant results to users. The term frequency-inverse document frequency model places greater weighting on rarer query terms. Over time the search could be improved using click-through data.  The results of the search could be presented in a number of visually appealing formats, including using information about the photo’s time and place to structure the presentation.
